Apple's Ping hits 1 million users in 48 hours

Apple tonight hit a milestone quickly as it reached over one million users of Ping within the first 48 hours of its going online. The tally represents a third of the three million that have downloaded iTunes 10. Internet Services VP Eddy Cue expected that number to grow much higher, as "many more people" are likely to download iTunes....

Google teases Sept. 8 event with possible image search hooks

Google sparked curiosity on Friday by sending out an invitation to Electronista and other members of the press for a special event on September 8. The invite is brief and teases a showing off of Google's "latest technological innovation" and an "inside look at the evolution of Google search." Somewhat unusually, the event is being held at San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and will have well-known search VP Marissa Mayer as well as key software engineers....

Android web use closes gap with iOS in the US for August

Android has significantly closed the gap with Apple in web traffic in the US, Quantcast said on Friday. Use of Google's mobile OS has climbed 17 percent from the start of the year until August, giving it exactly a quarter of traffic. Apple's iOS, meanwhile, has lost 11 percent over the same eight months and has a narrower lead at 56 percent....

Following Apple's announcement of the fourth-generation iPod touch, Belkin and WaterField have launched cases for the new iOS device. Belkin has announced 14 new cases -- five grip cases, two shield cases, four verve cases and three armbands. The grip cases are textured for easier handholding. The Grip Ergo with Strap features a fitted design and a removable strap, in translucent black or taro, while the Grip Groove Duo has a wavy texture and arrives in either black-and-clear or gray-and-purple color combinations. The jury for this year's Demo Cup, an open source competition that takes place during the Open World Forum, has sorted through entries and picked 13 finalists. The finalists include a variety of different products including the Mozilla 4 project from Mozilla, the Accelo project from Obeo, and the EveryDesk project from Conecta. The 13 finalists will compete against each other on October 1, demonstrating their products with an eight minute presentation. Following the presentations, the jury will hand out five Open Innovation Awards recognizing the most convincing demo...

Ringtone creation disappears from iTunes 10

The option of buying and creating ringtones has been removed from iTunes 10, users note. Under the software's View Options menu, the earlier "Ringtone" column has vanished; this previously let people know if it was possible to turn tracks from the iTunes Store into ringtones for an extra 99 cents. Throughout the rest of the program, the only references to ringtones include information on syncing and the Ringtones tab under the Library....

Nikon president Makoto Kimura in a new interview has dropped hints again at an in-between camera. He told Reuters the company wanted a camera "different from SLRs and compacts" and hoped to create a new category. It wouldn't be like typical mirrorless models, although Kimura wasn't clear on whether it would still be mirrored or occupy a pro point-and-shoot space like the Canon G11....

Samsung hopes to crack 10% smartphone share, sell 25m units

Samsung hopes to break through the 10 percent mark in smartphone share by the end of 2010, the company' mobile group head JK Shin said at the IFA show today [sub. required]. He was optimistic about Samsung's success in light of the Galaxy S and explained that Samsung now expects to ship 25 million smartphones this year, up from an earlier prediction of 18 million. It may ship as many as 50 million smartphones in 2011....

Despite being active for just a few days, Apple's Ping social network is already being invaded by spammers, says a Sophos security analyst. Some profiles, such as Katy Perry's, are reportedly being flooded with messages, often from scammers promising free Apple gear. "If half as many free iPads, iPhones and iPods were being given away as Ping comments might lead you to believe, there would be no reason to bother with going to an Apple store," comments Sophos' Chester Wisniewski....
